What are Broker Rankings? Broker Rankings compares your broker's performance on a particular stock set to that of other brokers. Broker Rankings measures the performance of an entire firm, but the underlying calculations are based on StarMine's market-tested single stock metrics for analyst recommendation performance and estimate accuracy. ![]() Broker Rankings reports appear under the Groupwide section, on a tab labeled Broker Rankings. Additional tabs under the Preferences menu allow users to create custom stock sets and peer groups for use in Broker Rankings. ![]() The Broker Comparison page displays broker rankings for a particular stock set. Users can select from StarMine standard stock sets, such as the S&P 500, their own broker's coverage list, or a user-defined stock set. Stock sets can be further limited to a selected region, sector or market cap. Users can choose to be compared to all brokers, or a user-defined peer group, and to limit the rankings to those brokers with the most coverage on the stock set. The user's own broker is always included in the results, regardless of their coverage For both recommendations and estimates, Broker Rankings consists of 3 metrics-the number of companies covered during the evaluation period, an aggregate score for that period referred to as the Coverage Adjusted Score, and the percent of 4- and 5-star scores earned on stocks during that period. The Coverage Adjusted Score is the broker's score on all stocks in the selected stock set. It is calculated first by averaging all single stock scores for the stock set, and then expanding the average to account for differences in coverage. Since averages of large data sets tend to be closer to the mean than those of small data sets, the Coverage Adjusted Score adjusts the average score by the amount of coverage. Scores for brokers with more coverage on the stock set are expanded more than those with less coverage. ![]() In Broker Rankings, users can select a standard stock set or create their own. Clicking on the Edit Stock Sets link on a Broker Rankings page redirects the user to a page where they can manage and create custom stock sets. There are two types of custom stock sets:
![]() Controls on the Broker Comparison page let users compare themselves to All Brokers, or to a user-defined group of peers. Peer Groups are created on the Peer Groups tab and can be shared with other users at your firm. Peer Groups must contain at least 10 members. Additionally, users can limit Broker Rankings results to those brokers with the most coverage on the stock set. Results can be limited to the top 10, 25, 50, 100 or 200 brokers based on the maximum of their recommendations and estimates coverage. Even if the user's broker is not among those with the most coverage, they will always be included in the results. ![]() Click on the broker name on the Broker Comparison page to view the Stock Set Performance page. This page displays the single stock scores and coverage percents for each stock in the stock set. Single stock scores are based on StarMine's Single Stock Recommendation Score (SRS) and Single Stock Estimate Score (SES). In order to earn an SRS score, brokers must have at least 3 months coverage. If a broker has less than 3 months of coverage, StarMine will display an "insufficient coverage" image. The rightmost column displays the name of the analyst who currently covers the stock. Analyst names are flagged with an "m" to denote cases in which more than one broker has covered the stock during the period. In these cases, the score for the stock is not entirely attributable to the current analyst. ![]() Clicking through on a ticker displays the details of the single stock recommendation performance for each recommendation during the period. The coverage summary at the bottom of the page contains a list of all of the analysts at the firm who have covered the stock during the period, as well as links to their performance and current data pages. |
